The Story Behind Total Athlete Care: thank you Coach "T" Teevens

When I started my practice, choosing a name wasn’t just about branding—it was about defining what I stood for. Total Athlete Care isn’t just a title; it’s a philosophy shaped by my experiences—both as an athlete, practitioner, and coach—and by the incredible mentors who have influenced my journey.

One of those mentors was Buddy Teevens. I met Buddy during my time working with Dartmouth College Athletics in their Peak Performance Program. My role involved working hands-on with his players—manual therapy, movement training, assessments, and, just as importantly, the bigger-picture conversations about how to take care of themselves as both athletes and people.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what Buddy thought of my work at first. But over time, he saw the results. By the end of my time at Dartmouth, I was working almost exclusively with his team—helping to prevent injuries, get players back on the field, and reinforce the idea that taking care of the body isn’t just about performance, it’s about longevity.

Buddy, like me, had a brain that moved fast—always asking why, always digging deeper, always looking for a better way. He never made me feel like I had to slow down or fit into a box. Instead, he encouraged that curiosity, that need to understand not just what worked but why it worked.

And beyond all that, Buddy just treated people right. He showed the same respect to the janitor as he did to the top donor, the same care to a walk-on as to the star player. That’s something I’ve carried with me ever since—because taking care of people, truly caring, should never be about status. It should be about seeing the human in front of you and meeting them where they are.

That’s the foundation of Total Athlete Care. It’s about more than fixing injuries or improving mobility—it’s about making sure athletes feel supported in every aspect of their wellness.

If you want to get a sense of the kind of impact Buddy had, I highly recommend watching this ESPN documentary about his life and legacy. His influence reaches far beyond the field, and I’m grateful for the role he played in shaping how I approach my work. Here are the links to watch:
